Casino Gambling Epidemic Hits China’s Nouveau Riche Many Chinese media outlets have of late turned their focus to a casino gambling epidemic among China’s nouveau riche. Many of China’s richest and most prominent
businessmen have adopted casino gambling as a favorite
activity. It is not uncommon, according to a popular Chinese
daily, for businessman from wealthy provinces such as Zhejiang
and Jiangsu make frequent trips away from the Chinese mainland Sometimes, this popular hobby of rich Chinese businessmen goes terribly awry. According to a businessman from Zheijang, at least six businessmen from his province frittered away the entire worth of their companies in casino gambling. They sold their companies in order to pay their debts and then fled to avoid the creditors that they could not pay. The streets of Macau, many say, are lined with Chinese casino gambling addicts who wait for the casinos to open in the morning so that they can recoup their losses. Gambling is strictly illegal on the Chinese mainland, although the government does not expressly forbid its citizens from casino gambling on foreign territory.
